What’s Labor Day without a Burger?

Happy Labor Day!  I hope everyone is enjoying their extra day off this weekend.  I know we are.  As you read this, we are hopefully either on our way to Grandfather Mountain, already there, or on our way back.

Why “hopefully” you ask?  Because this trip was originally planned for Sunday.  Just picture it.  The weather is beautiful, the car is packed, everyone is in their seats and ready to go.  We drive out of our neighborhood, stop to get gas, pop on a movie for the two hour drive and BAM.  Just like that Nicholas loses his breakfast not once, and not even twice, but three times in the back of the car.

Sigh.

Around we turn and head back home.  We spend the next hour scouring out the car and unpacking the cooler when down pops Nicholas, right as rain and ready for a meal and an adventure.  Of course it was too late to head to Grandfather Mountain at this point, so instead we took advantage of the beautiful day, filled the cooler back up and went to our local nature preserve.  We had a lovely picnic, hiked a few miles through the woods and stopped at the nature center to pet a coral snake.

What started off as a really bad morning, turned out to be a really fun afternoon.  And, we still get to take stab number two at Grandfather Mountain tomorrow.  Wish us luck.

Hopefully you all have some fun ideas in mind to celebrate the holiday as well.  If you plan on doing some grilling, I’ve got a killer burger for you.  I discovered this recipe a little over a year ago and it has become a staple at our house ever since.  They’re delicious either on the grill or pan fried, and we’ve done both; many times.

So in honor of Labor Day and to start off sandwich week in the kick toosh way it deserves, I present you with the Almighty Blue Cheese Turkey Burger.  Enough said.

Ingredients Needed:

1 Pd of Ground Turkey
2 Garlic Cloves
5 Oz of Portabello Mushrooms, Chopped
1/2 Onion, Chopped Fine
2 Tbsp of Soy Sauce
4 Oz of Blue Cheese
A Pinch of Sea Salt

Mix all your ingredients together and form them into patties.  I can usually get 5 decent sized burgers from mine.

Place your burgers either on the grill or in a large frying pan.  Let them cook through flipping once.

Once they’re cooked through, drop a small amount of blue cheese on the top of each burger.  Close up the grill top and let the cheese melt for a minute or two.  If you’re pan frying them, just grab the top to your frying pan and let the cheese melt down.

Before melting….

And after melting.

See all that juicy sauce in there?  That’s one of the reasons I love pan frying these beauties.  I’m sure the burger is so much healthier done on the grill without it, but darn if it doesn’t taste absolutely amazing.

Now you just need to grab a finished burger, pop it into your bun, add the desired condiments, and bite in to one of the best darn turkey burgers you’ll ever put your mouth on.
