Turkey Apple Bacon Grilled Cheese

September 7, 2010 By Julie 17 Comments

Another day another sandwich I always say and today I’m bringing you back to an old classic.   If you’ve lived in Charlotte for any period of time in the past 10 or so years, then you’ll know it’s a city of transplants.  While native Charlotteans do exist, it’s rare to find them.  Most people living here have moved from other areas of the country and especially large numbers have come from the North East and the New York area in particular.

The plus side to this migration is that we southerners get to experience some delicious foods that we typically would have to travel north to find because several of these New Yorkers are making the choice to open restaurants and share their cooking talents with us non-northerners.  I can think of at least one pizza place off hand that serves A.mazing New York pizza.

And then there’s the New York Deli by our house.  I’m sad to say it closed almost as quickly as it opened, but when it was alive and kicking we would visit it for breakfast/lunch after church almost every Sunday.  On the menu they had this grilled turkey and cheese sandwich with apples and bacon that I could never resist.  Something about the sweetness of the apples with the savory and salty of the meat and cheese reeled me in every time.

Of course, it being a deli sandwich, they would typically put about a half a pound of shaved turkey, and make the sandwich so big and delicious you could barely bite into it.  I wanted to make my sandwich that big for you, really I did, but in the end I…

1. just don’t eat that much meat in one sitting

2. didn’t want to spend that much money on a turkey sandwich (yes the secret’s out, you now know that in addition to being lazy I’m also cheap) so my turkey addition is a little more paltry than it’s one inch thick deli counterpart.  Have no fear though, it’s just as tasty.

Ingredients Needed:

8 Slices of Toasting Bread
4 Slices of Bacon
5 Oz of Shaved Turkey
1 Apple, Chopped Thin
4 Decent Sized Slices of Cheese
3 Tbsp of Butter

Start it off by cooking up your bacon until it’s crispy and delicious looking.

Once it’s cooked up, set it off to the side and drain the fat out of your pan.  Now grab your bread and butter up one side of each piece.

Place your bread butter side down and add on a thin slice of cheese.

Now add on your turkey and then your bacon.

Finally add on your apples and then follow it up by another thin slice of cheese.

Close up the whole shebang with another slice of buttered bread and throw that beautiful creation into your pan on medium heat for a couple minutes on both sides to melt the cheese and then crank the heat up to medium high and cook it for another minute or two to brown it up all pretty and delicious.

Here is it is ready to be grilled up….

…and here it is all browned up and ready to enjoy.

New York, New York, I’m so glad you found your way to Charlotte.  Now let’s dig into this glorious grilled cheese.

I’m a big fan of adding apple to grilled cheese sandwiches. I usually use green apples with Turkey. I will have to try a red apple.

I have had an apple grilled cheese on my list of recipes to make for a LONG time but just haven’t gotten around to making it! This looks and sounds amazing! If you add bacon to anything it’s got to be good, right? I’m going to save and try this!! Thanks!

Enjoy your icy Toy Story 3. I’m sure that will be awesome.

I’m not sure how I feel about apples on a sandwich. I trust you though!

Another hit! Oh man!! I can’t wait to try this sandwich!

It’s so funny to me that North Carolina is considered the South. So much of my life has been spent in Texas that when I lived in New York for 5 years and heard North Carolina referred to as the South I always laughed. LOL! NY does have some amazing food though. The pizza…oh yes, the pizza!
