Galaktoboureko: A Classic Greek Dessert with an Autumn Flavored Twist

October 24, 2012 By Julie 8 Comments

Tis the season for dessert and trust me, I promise not to disappoint.  This past weekend the hubby and I trekked off to our monthly supper club gathering where the theme centered around the Mediterranean flavors of Greece.  I was assigned the sweet ending for my contribution to the meal.

Now everybody knows and has had baklava at some point in their lives.  After all, it’s the most famous finisher known around the world in Greek cuisine.  I debated putting a batch of it together, but then I thought, why be predictable?  Life, and my upcoming Greek meal for that matter, deserves a little shake up to keep things interesting.

Chocolate Cinnaberry Cookies

October 15, 2012 By Julie 12 Comments

I recently read a report on NPR’s website claiming that the secret to winning a highly coveted Nobel Award may indeed be something as elementary as eating more chocolate.  Now Seriously.  If I had known this at a younger age, I’m certain I would be standing on that podium accepting my award right about now. I can almost imagine it as I type this;

“Fellow members of the academy, I’m honored to accept this award today for successfully breaking up a war over which child deserved procurement of the coveted red plate with the Start Wars yoda picture on top……”

Ok, so maybe not in this lifetime (that would take more chocolate than this body could handle in ten lifetimes), but if eating more of the dark brown sweet goodness means I can at the very least broker a better peace among the inhabitants within my own household then I’m all for it.  Baby steps right?

Caramel Apple Frozen Yogurt and a Lesson in the Art of Apple Growing from Tree Top

September 18, 2012 By Julie 10 Comments

A few months back I had the privilege of flying west to the great state of Washington and spending a couple whirlwind days with the amazing people at Tree Top apple juice.    I have to say, I always enjoy these adventures when they’re presented to me.  The generosity of the people sponsoring the event never fails to astound and the education you come away with is something you could only garner through viewing the process straight from the source.  This trip was certainly no exception.

Pumpkin Roll Cake with Whipped Kahlua Cream Filling

September 11, 2012 By Julie 23 Comments

Hey all!  Did you miss me?  I sure missed all of you.  It’s been one heck of a non-stop summer.  We spent time with friends, days with family and even introduced a new baby boy cousin into our clan. Now that the kids are back in school and things are finally starting to settle into a bit of a groove, I figured it was high time to hop back onto the blogging bandwagon and get with it already.

Last time we spoke I mentioned some life changes on my end of the internet.   I didn’t feel fully comfortable divulging them at the time, but I think I’m finally hitting a place where I’m ready to share with the world so here goes nothing.

Quickie Delectable Puff Pastry

June 15, 2012 By Julie 16 Comments

Puff Pastry.  It’s one of those products you always find yourself buying at the store because it looks way too daunting to try yourself at home.  Well I’m here to tell you that, thanks to King Arthur Flour (KAF), processed puff pastry can take a kick to the curb.  There’s a new, simpler gal in town.   The best part is that this method works magic in pie crust as well, yielding flaky yet fabulous crust (sounds like a few Hollywood celebrities I know).
