Congrats to my Friend Faith on her Published Cookbook!

November 9, 2012 By Julie 14 Comments

I know I’ve been a bit lax with blog posting these past couple months.  Pregnancy with an unplanned fourth boy has a crazy way of doing that to you.  Despite all the excuses, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to share the accomplishments of a very special friend.  My friend Faith Gorsky from An Edible Mosaic just had her first cookbook released: An Edible Mosaic: Middle Eastern Fare with Extraordinary Flair.   I’ve pretty much known Faith since I first began blogging.  We’ve supported each other, shared opportunities and just generally lifted each other up throughout the process that is food writing.  I can’t tell you how proud I am to help her introduce and promote her first published work.

Thai Chicken Salad with Peanut Dressing

May 31, 2012 By Julie 18 Comments

With Memorial Day officially in the tail lights, it’s time to begin ushering in the warm weather season. The boys have one week of school left and then we  turn off the alarm clocks and turn on the lazy days of summer. Well… maybe not so lazy if you’re in this family. We’re taking a week to recover and then it’s full steam ahead with camps, travels and summer school programs. This year we’ll be coasting everywhere from Delaware to Hilton Head to Minneapolis and back again. I’m actually going to be attempting my first overnight drive cross country with all three boys and no husband in tow for moral support (and associated heavy lifting). Wish me lots and lots of luck; I’ll be fortunate to make it out in one piece.

Simply Scandinavian: A Cookbook Review

August 19, 2011 By Julie 15 Comments

Simply Scandinavian: Travelling Through Time with Finnish Cuisine and Nature is a well written, beautifully photographed cookbook that caught my eye from the moment I pulled it out of the packaging.  The authors, Tero Kallio and Kimmo Saira, have broken the book out by season beginning with Spring and ending with Winter.  The recipes range from simple to complex and many of the ingredients are quite unique.  With chef driven instruction for everything from rheindeer carpaccio, to soup of moose and oven-baked cheese, to Vorschmack with potato salad and beetroot crisps, to rabbit sausages with Jerusalem artichokes, I’ll admit that I was drawn in and ready to cook almost immediately.

Family Friendly Fridays: A Review of 400 Best Sandwich Recipes

May 13, 2011 By Julie 21 Comments

Who loves a good sandwich?  I know I sure do.  That’s why I was delighted when Alison Lewis asked me to review her newly published cookbook; 400 Best Sandwich Recipes.  As soon as I received it, I knew it would become one of my go-to kitchen favorites.  With everything from the classic club and sloppy joe, to international flavors you might not have thought to put together on your own (think Banh Mi, a Vietnamese sandwich containing pork, radishes and pickled carrots), to an extensive list of condiment recipes, this book has it all.  She even throws in a handful of dessert sandwiches that are guaranteed to get your sweet tooth dancing.  The best part is that the majority of recipes are quick, easy and healthy.  Definitely my variety of cookbook.

Family Friendly Fridays: A Review of Small Batch Baking For Chocolate Lovers

May 6, 2011 By Julie 55 Comments

Debby Maugans is my new best friend.  No I’ve never met her, but let me just say this.  Any woman that can put together a cookbook like the one she did, most certainly should qualify for best friend status.

I recently received her newest cookbook for review entailing a treasure of recipes for small batch baking.  But we’re not talking just any old recipes.  We’re talking all chocolate, all the time recipes.  With everything from strawberry chocolate tarts to chocolate chip cookie souffles to white chocolate lemon creme brulee to this beauty pictured above, the diva milk chocolate layer cake, she fills my chocolate sweet tooth like no other cookbook ever has.  And get this, it’s all done in manageable proportions.  The recipe for that cake you see above makes two of those little chocolate gifts; one for me and one for my husband.  One indulgence and that’s it.  No extra cake waiting around to taunt your waistline day after day.  Just one glorious craving fulfilled in a personal sized portion.
