Fried Green Tomatoes with Goat Cheese Basil Dipping Sauce

July 7, 2011 By Julie 34 Comments

A short while back I dropped a truly Southern dish of Stewed Tomatoes and Okra onto the blog.  While chatting up a windstorm about my new fangled Southern self, I mentioned an upcoming Fried Green Tomato recipe.  Well get ready, because Southern cooking has never tasted better than these charmers right here.

Ever since attending the Food Blog Forum Conference back in September where I was served a Fried Green Tomato Slider that officially knocked my Northern rooted socks off, I’ve been wanting to try my hand at the little buggers.  The other day while perusing through the spoils of my local farm stand, I finally stumbled upon the fruit that eluded me up to that point in my paltry culinary life – Green Tomatoes.    I promptly snatched up two of the juicy unripe beauties and brought them home.

I proceeded to post a few options for how to cook them up on my facebook page. I had planned to either emulate the slider I so adored or attempt a fried green tomato BLT.  However, one post caught my eye from a reader who said that she liked her fried green tomatoes with a side of, well, fried green tomatoes.  Plain and simple.  And why not.  These show stoppers really don’t need any dressing up.  They’re perfect just as they are.  Serve them with the suggested sauce, or, if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, slide them between two slices of bread and create your very own Southern sandwich masterpiece.

Asian Veggie Pasta

June 7, 2011 By Julie 27 Comments

Asian veggie pasta is one of those rare dishes that I consider to have “the trifecta effecta” going for it.  And just what do I mean by the trifecta effecta?  Allow me to explain.  It covers the three big aspirations for any fare you put together.

Weeknight Chicken and Broccoli

June 1, 2011 By Julie 25 Comments

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial day.  Our holiday weekend involved a camping trip up to the Smoky Mountains.  I guess you could say that when there are four boys living in the house, at some point in time, sleeping in the great outdoors becomes a given.  Fortunately for me, I enjoy it as much as they do.  If you’ve never been before, make sure you go at some point in time.  There is nothing quite like The Park.  Incredible hiking, amazing scenery, quaint towns, and windy roads leading to God knows where.

Saucy Mama Breakfast Burritos + a Giveaway

May 17, 2011 By Julie 41 Comments

I can never resist the temptation to join in a good ol’ recipe contest.  Saucy Mama recently threw down the gauntlet to me and a handful other talented food bloggers to see who could dream up the best five ingredient recipe using select Saucy Mama condiments.  With prizes and bragging rights on the line, I just couldn’t let the opportunity to throw my hat in the ring pass me by.

Let me just say, it is hard to come up with a recipe that only uses five ingredients.  I’m the kind of cook that likes to add a dab of this and a dollop of that until I get things just right.  Some of my creations are downright embarrassing there are so many additions!  But I wasn’t going to let that deter me.  I’d been wanting to put together a breakfast burrito for sometime now, and it struck me.  Why not add a bit of the southwest dressing to my eggs and see what happens?  The result is a simple and satisfying breakfast burrito that whips up in no time flat but tastes like you worked all morning putting it together.  Throw a little cheese, bacon, and cilantro into the mixture and you’ll be licking your lips and heading back for another round.

Family Friendly Fridays: A Review of 400 Best Sandwich Recipes

May 13, 2011 By Julie 21 Comments

Who loves a good sandwich?  I know I sure do.  That’s why I was delighted when Alison Lewis asked me to review her newly published cookbook; 400 Best Sandwich Recipes.  As soon as I received it, I knew it would become one of my go-to kitchen favorites.  With everything from the classic club and sloppy joe, to international flavors you might not have thought to put together on your own (think Banh Mi, a Vietnamese sandwich containing pork, radishes and pickled carrots), to an extensive list of condiment recipes, this book has it all.  She even throws in a handful of dessert sandwiches that are guaranteed to get your sweet tooth dancing.  The best part is that the majority of recipes are quick, easy and healthy.  Definitely my variety of cookbook.

Asian Pork Salad

April 11, 2011 By Julie 25 Comments

Before I jump into today’s recipe, I need to put a few items on the table.  First up, a quick reminder that today is the last day to enter the $100 Visa card giveaway!  Be sure to get your name in the hat.  I’ll be announcing the winner on this post tomorrow night around 8pm with the help of random.org.  And second, starting the week after Easter, I’ll be moving from three posts a week to two.  Posts will mainly be published on Tuesday and Friday with an occasional extra post thrown in for good measure.  With the growth of Mommie Cooks, it’s become increasingly difficult to keep up a three posts a week schedule and still have time left over to spend with my boys.  I love Mommie Cooks, but family time is vital and will always come first.  My hope is that dropping down to two days a week will accord me the best of both worlds; spending quality time with my family while still having the ability to participate in a community I’ve come to need and love.

UPDATE:  When all was said and done, I had 169 comments to choose from.  Thank you so much for all the support, you guys rock!  After entering the number into random.org, the winner of the $100 Visa Gift card is…… Comment number 63!!  PattyPro, congrats!  I’ll be in touch through email to get your information. 🙂

Enough announcements; I’m pretty sure you’re itching to cook up a little Asian salad.  I know I sure am.
